In 7 days, social media could be blocked across Nepal
Following a Cabinet decision and Supreme Court directive, all online and social media platforms must register with the Nepalese government within seven days. Platforms failing to comply may be deactivated in Nepal.
The Nepalese government has made it mandatory for all online and social media platforms to register before operating in the country. This decision follows the Cabinet meeting held on 9 Bhadra and a Supreme Court directive.
All platform operators, both domestic and international, are required to complete registration within seven days. The move is aimed at ensuring compliance with Nepalese laws and regulations regarding online operations.
Platforms that fail to register or remain uncontactable will be deactivated in Nepal. The Nepal Telecommunications Authority will oversee the reactivation of platforms once registration is complete.
This step follows the Supreme Court’s order in the Sidhakura.com case, which instructed the government to ensure that all platforms, including foreign services, register before operating in Nepal. Authorities say this measure is intended to promote accountability and legal compliance in the digital space.
