Rising Drug Use in Nepal: A Growing National Concern

Drug use has been the most talked about issue in today’s era. And that is true with Nepal as well. What was once considered a hidden problem limited to certain urban areas has now become a widespread social challenge affecting both cities and rural communities across the country.

Over the past few years, Nepal has seen a noticeable rise in drug related cases, especially among young people. Police records and rehabilitation centers report increasing numbers of arrests and admissions linked to substances such as brown sugar, heroin, cannabis, and misuse of prescription drugs. Authorities say that drug abuse is no longer confined to a specific group or location, but is now spreading across different age groups and social backgrounds.

In Kathmandu Valley, police frequently carry out operations targeting drug trafficking networks. In several cases, individuals have been arrested with significant quantities of narcotics, often linked to organized supply chains. Many young users are also found to be both consumers and low level carriers, introduced into the network through peer pressure, social influence, or online connections.

Outside the capital, similar cases have been reported from districts including Chitwan, Sunsari, Morang, Kanchanpur, and other urbanizing areas. In many of these incidents, youths often students or unemployed individuals are found in possession of illegal drugs. Police say that while some are addicted users, others become involved in distribution as a means of sustaining their dependency or earning quick money.

In one common pattern seen by authorities, initial experimentation with drugs often begins in social gatherings or under the influence of friends. Over time, casual use can develop into dependency, leading to serious physical, mental, and financial consequences. Families are often left struggling to cope with behavioral changes, financial strain, and social stigma.

Rehabilitation centers in Nepal have also reported a steady rise in admissions. Officials working in these centers say that overcrowding has become a major issue, and relapse rates remain high due to limited post-recovery support. Many recovering users face difficulties reintegrating into society because of stigma and lack of employment opportunities, which often pushes them back into addiction cycles.

Authorities have also raised concerns about the connection between drug abuse and other criminal activities. Police reports suggest that individuals under the influence of drugs are sometimes involved in theft, violent behavior, domestic disputes, and road accidents. In several cases, addiction has been directly linked to crimes committed to finance drug use.

Experts believe multiple factors are contributing to the rise in drug abuse in Nepal. These include unemployment, lack of awareness, peer pressure, mental health issues, and easy access to pharmaceutical drugs. In addition, Nepal’s open border with neighboring countries is also seen as a contributing factor in the illegal drug supply chain.
