Two Arrested in Kathmandu for Allegedly Purchasing Bones and Ash from Pashupati Cremation Site

Kathmandu — Police have arrested two men for allegedly purchasing bones and ash taken from a burning body at the Pashupati cremation site. The suspects are identified as 42-year-old Ramnandan Thakur, originally from Lalbandi Municipality-2, Sarlahi, currently living in Kapan, and 41-year-old Mishrilal Yadav from Balanbihul Rural Municipality-6, Saptari, currently residing in Gaurighat. According to Kathmandu Police SP Apil Raj Bohara, Thakur was the main buyer while Yadav played a supporting role. Police said the incident dates back to July 23, around 2:45 PM, when a body belonging to Ram Shahi (65) of Banepa Municipality-9, who lived in Koteshwor Narephant, was being cremated at Pashupati’s cremation site, Chita No. 2. Two cremation workers, identified as Ganesh Prasad Dhakal alias Jeevanath Dhakal and Vinayak Mainali, allegedly removed bones along with ash from the burning body, placed them in a container, and later sold them. The recent arrests of Thakur and Yadav followed police investigations into the sale of these remains. Police recovered bone powder and ash-like substances from the suspects. Both were apprehended on Thursday and are currently under further investigation by Gaushala Police Circle. Authorities have not disclosed the motive behind the purchase of the remains, but similar past cases have been linked to illegal trade for spiritual or ritual purposes.
