The government of Nepal recently ordered the shutdown of 26 social media platforms that had not completed registration. Out of these, 8 operators have already reached out to the Ministry of Communication and IT.

Hamro Patro, a Nepali app, began its registration process on Thursday, avoiding disruption. Soon after, Meta—the company behind Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads—also contacted the ministry to understand required documents.

On Friday, X (formerly Twitter) officially reached out, and Chinese social media company WeChat also contacted the ministry to inquire about registration procedures.

However, major platforms like YouTube and LinkedIn have not yet responded. Others including Snapchat, Reddit, Discord, Pinterest, Signal, Quora, Tumblr, Clubhouse, Mastodon, Rumble, MeWe, VK, Line, IMO, Zalo, and Soul also remain out of contact with the government. Among these, YouTube and LinkedIn are widely used in Nepal, while others have relatively smaller user bases.
