RPP Demands Durga Prasai’s Release, Slams Government’s Authoritarian Tendencies

2 Mangsir, Kathmandu: The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has strongly demanded the release of Durga Prasai, a medical professional and coordinator of the “Save Nation, Nationality, Religion, Culture, and Citizens” campaign, who was taken into police custody late last night.

Prasai was reportedly arrested from his residence following statements he had made, which authorities claimed could potentially disturb public peace. The RPP, however, has expressed deep concern and regret over the action, calling it unjustified and a violation of democratic principles.

RPP spokesperson Mohankumar Shrestha, in a press statement, accused the government of attempting to suppress dissenting voices, curtail freedom of expression, and demonstrate undemocratic and authoritarian tendencies.

“Arresting Durga Prasai in the middle of the night from his home, simply for expressing his views, is inhumane, condemnable, and deeply regrettable,” the party said. “This action by the government clearly reflects its intent to silence differing opinions, stifle freedom of expression, and exhibit undemocratic and authoritarian behavior.”

The RPP has called for Prasai’s immediate and unconditional release, urging the government to respect citizens’ rights to express their opinions without fear of retaliation.

According to SP and spokesperson of the Kathmandu District Police Office, Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, the Kathmandu District Administration Office has granted a four-day custody period, meaning Prasai will remain in police custody for at least four days.

Authorities stated that Prasai had been actively preparing for a nationwide protest scheduled for 7 Mangsir. Ahead of this planned demonstration, teams from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, Teku, and Kathmandu District Police arrested him. Police officials claimed that his statements had the potential to disrupt public order.

The incident has sparked criticism from political groups and civil society activists, who see the arrest as part of a growing trend of authoritarian practices and suppression of dissent in the country. Observers have emphasized the importance of protecting freedom of expression and upholding democratic values, particularly during times of political mobilization and protest.
