National Issues Must Be Resolved Before Elections, Says Former King Gyanendra Shah

Former King Gyanendra Shah has expressed the view that proceeding with elections without resolving pressing national problems would not be appropriate at this time. He made the remarks in a video message released on Wednesday to mark the 74th National Democracy Day.

While acknowledging that periodic elections are a natural process in a democratic system, Shah said the country’s current situation is far from normal. He noted that public sentiment increasingly favors resolving serious national challenges before moving ahead with the electoral process to avoid further political conflict.

Shah emphasized the need for understanding and consensus among political forces to prevent instability after elections. He argued that elections held without prior agreement and problem-solving could lead to prolonged political tension and uncertainty in the country.

The former king also criticized what he described as a growing tendency to demand rights without fulfilling duties. He said the mindset of sharing power for personal benefit must be replaced with a collective approach focused on national interest to give the country new momentum.

Warning that the nation is becoming trapped in pressure and influence from various sides, Shah said democracy cannot become strong unless citizens themselves are conscious and vigilant. He added that many people feel the country is currently facing confusion, unrest, and even a crisis of national existence.

Shah further called for serious self-reflection on what past political movements and changes have truly delivered to the nation and its people. He concluded that addressing core national problems first, followed by elections, would be the most responsible path forward.
