Government Collects Only 82.26% of Revenue Target in Seven Months
The government has collected 82.26% of its total revenue target in the first seven months of the fiscal year 2082/83. Total revenue collected amounts to NPR 6.69 trillion against the target of NPR 8.13 trillion. Customs, VAT, and income tax collection fell short of targets, while some sectors showed slight increases compared to last year. Revenue collection shortfalls may affect overall fiscal planning for the current year.
The government has achieved only 82.26% of its revenue target for the first seven months (Shrawan–Magh) of fiscal year 2082/83, according to the Ministry of Finance. Out of the NPR 8.13 trillion target from taxes and other revenue sources, NPR 6.69 trillion has been collected so far.
Compared to the same period last fiscal year, overall revenue collection increased by 2.83%. In fiscal year 2081/82, the government had collected NPR 6.50 trillion by Magh-end. However, the shortfall in key revenue sources has affected overall collection performance.
Customs revenue fell short of its target, with NPR 1.35 trillion collected against a target of NPR 1.70 trillion, achieving only 79.37% of the goal. Meanwhile, value-added tax (VAT) collection reached NPR 1.96 trillion, or 90.44% of the NPR 2.17 trillion target.
Excise duty collection has performed slightly better, achieving 90.90% of the target, with NPR 105 billion collected against a target of NPR 115 billion. Income tax collection remains a concern, with only 72.10% of the target met—NPR 158.66 billion collected against a goal of NPR 220 billion.
Department-wise, no revenue collection agency met its target. The Customs Department collected 83.84% of its target, while the Inland Revenue Department achieved 81.36%.
Despite the shortfall, some areas showed growth compared to last year. Income tax collection slightly declined by 0.81%, while excise duty rose by 10.88%. VAT increased by 7.58%, and customs revenue rose by 7.53% compared to the same period last fiscal year.
The Ministry of Finance has indicated that the shortfall in key revenue sources may affect overall fiscal planning and highlights the need for better compliance and collection efficiency in the remaining months of the fiscal year.
