Egg Producers Finally Receive Cost Price After Years of Loss

Egg-producing farmers in Nepal have started receiving the production cost for their eggs after years of selling below cost. The Nepal Layers Poultry Association announced that from 6 Shrawan, the price for large eggs was set at NPR 525 per crate, rising to NPR 545 per crate by 12 Bhadra. Currently, the retail price is NPR 23 per egg, with farmers receiving NPR 18, above the cost price of NPR 16.65.

Association President Vinod Pokharel stated that the price increase gives hope to poultry farmers, who had suffered heavy losses due to rising feed, labor, and other production costs. Many small farmers exited the business after the COVID-19 pandemic, reducing daily egg production from 50 million to around 26 million. Only 150 farmers now produce eggs regularly, down from approximately 900 previously.

Experts and former poultry association leaders emphasized the need for continued government support to stabilize the industry and encourage modern production techniques. Such measures are crucial to help remaining farmers recover and expand production sustainably.

The improved egg prices have boosted confidence among farmers who had faced financial losses and displacement over the years. Authorities and industry stakeholders hope that the renewed support and stable pricing will ensure long-term growth and sustainability of Nepal’s poultry sector.
