Over Six Lakh New Voters Added Ahead of Elections
620,000 New Voters Added Ahead of Upcoming House of Representatives Election
2 Mangsir, Kathmandu — Nepal has recorded a significant rise in voter registration as 620,000 new voters have been added to the national voter roll. The updated figure reflects data collected up to 9:30 PM on Monday, according to the Election Commission.
Out of the total new registrations, 311,414 voters were added through the Election Commission’s regular server system, which continues to process applications nationwide. Additionally, 308,585 voters were registered using the National Identity Card (NID) system, indicating an increasing reliance on digital identity verification in the voter enrollment process.
This surge in voter registration follows the government’s recent decision to open voter enrollment through an ordinance aimed particularly at engaging the Gen-Z population, many of whom will be participating in the electoral process for the first time. The move was introduced to encourage wider youth participation in the upcoming federal election.
The Election Commission has stated that the voter registration campaign is being carried out with a focus on the House of Representatives election scheduled for 21 Falgun. The process, initially set to close on Kartik 30, saw overwhelming interest from the public. In response, authorities extended the deadline to Mangsir 5, allowing more eligible citizens to register their names on the voter list.
Election officials say the continued rise in registrations demonstrates a positive trend in political engagement, especially among young voters. They expect the final voter count to increase further by the end of the extended registration period.
With the election date approaching, the Election Commission is preparing logistical, administrative, and technical arrangements to ensure a smooth and efficient voting process for all newly registered as well as existing voters.
