US Military Performance at Tundikhel Sparks Debate

A photo of the U.S. military performing at Tundikhel in Kathmandu went viral on social media, generating controversy just weeks before Nepal’s upcoming House of Representatives election. Many people expressed concern, claiming foreign influence in local military ceremonies. However, the Nepali Army clarified that the performance was part of a regular ceremonial exchange and not linked to any political agenda.

The Nepali Army explained that such events are a normal part of Army Day and Maha Shivaratri celebrations, which often feature friendly participation from foreign military bands. “These programs are meant to strengthen military cooperation and are routinely conducted in Nepal and other countries” said Army spokesperson Assistant Rathi Rajaram Basnet. He added that Nepal also sends its own military bands abroad for similar ceremonial events.

Nepal and the United States have maintained military relations since 1947, and both sides regularly participate in joint training, staff exchanges, and ceremonial visits. The Army emphasized that the U.S. band’s performance at Tundikhel was in line with past practices and part of ongoing bilateral cooperation, which includes similar events with India, China, Pakistan, the UK, and other countries.

Despite these clarifications, the timing of the performance during an election season led some political groups to question the intent. Critics argued that Western powers were trying to influence local youth movements. Officials from the government and the Army stressed that the event followed long-standing routines and urged the public not to spread misleading claims.

The Nepali Army reiterated that its collaborations with foreign militaries are regular and apolitical, focused on training, knowledge exchange, and ceremonial events. It called on citizens and political parties to respect these programs and avoid politicizing them, noting that similar exchanges have been conducted under multiple past governments without controversy.
